The Skuldelev Ships 1 - Topography, Archaeology, History, Conservation and Display

385,00 DKK

The Skuldelev finds in Roskilde in the 1960ies, the following conservation of the many thousands of fragments of the wrecks and the restoration of the ships, have given rise to many new observations and significant interpretations. At the same time, the development of new natural scientific methods for dating increase the knowledge and understanding of the ships and the barriers of Roskilde Fjord. This volume describes the five ships themselves and the conservation treatments, making it possible to exhibit them in the Viking Ship Museum, together with their interpretation in a historical and topographical context. The wrecks represent two Danish, two Norwegian and one from Ireland, all dating from the eleventh century, illuminating central aspects of the history of the concluding phase of the Viking Age.
