Ladby. A Danish Ship-Grave from the Viking Age

385,00 DKK

When the buried viking ship in Ladby was first discovered and its excavation well underway in 1935, Denmark was delighted to now having a grave-ship find like Gokstad and Oseberg in Norway. The enthusiasm paled however, as the grave turned out to have been robbed of equipment in antiquity, and the wood had rotted away, and except for the iron nails, leaving only an impression in the soil. The archaeologist responsible of the excavation ensured that the ship was preserved for posterity by enclosing the ship in a concrete vault, on top of which the mound was re-built, so the public can still visit it and scholars continue to research on it.
