The book tells the fascinating story of drinking horns in Scandinavia and Northern Europe from Classical Antiquity up to the 19th century. With special emphasis on the Middle Ages the text describes the ceremonial use of drinking horns and presents the large collection at the National Museum of Denmark. The study includes written sources and literature as well as depictions of drinking horns in art.
A certain magical sphere surrounds the use of drinking horns throughout history, and dramatic tales and stories are attached to several of them. This is probably the reason for the magnificent mountings and stands in gilt silver and bronze, which characterize the drinking horns from the Middle Ages.
