Since the introduction of the metal detector the number of roman coins found within the area of modern Denmark has grown enormously. In these volumes a wealth of new information on the hundreds of new finds are presented together for the first time. The many new finds have enlarged the distribution of the Roman coins, both geographically and contextually, and changed the composition of the finds spectrum.
For the first time the new finds are presented and discussed in relation to the already known finds. This has shed new light on the old finds, and leads the author to present a completely new understanding of the Roman coin finds from Denmark. Contexts and provenance of the individual coins are recognized as parameters of equal importance for the interpretation of the finds as the numismatic evidence inherent in the coin. This shift in theoretical paradigm has enabled the author to discuss the most interesting questions regarding the Roman coins found in Denmark, namely: how, where and when were Roman coins used in a non-Roman context.
The study is divided into two parts: Vol. 1 discusses the finds from Sealand, Funen and Jutland while vol. 2 focusses on the finds from the island Bornholm. The division reflects the vast differences in the material culture as well as the foreign relations between those two areas.
